Forex scams in the Philippines and how to check a licence

Check the SEC Philippines register at sec.gov.ph before you send anyone money.

How the money actually leaves. Only the first step is in the reader's hands: the entity is on the SEC Philippines register, or it is not.

The first check is the SEC Philippines register, not the app store

Before you judge a platform by its screenshots, check whether the entity appears on the SEC Philippines list of registered entities at sec.gov.ph. The register is public, and it is the only local source that can answer the question for you. If a name is not there, that is your answer for that entity.

Do not treat a polished app, a Facebook page with many followers, or a referral from a friend as proof. Those are marketing surfaces, not registers. Open sec.gov.ph in a separate browser tab and search the exact company name you were given, not the brand name shown in the app.

Keep a screenshot of what you find, including the date you checked. If the entity is registered, that still does not tell you whether the specific product being offered to you is covered. Read what the register actually says about the entity rather than assuming.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Brands are marketing; search the legal entity the broker prints at the bottom of its site.

Scam patterns that keep showing up on GCash and Maya

The most common pattern starts in a group chat. Someone posts screenshots of gains, then invites you to a smaller chat where a "mentor" or "account manager" walks you through signing up. Payment is requested by GCash, Maya, InstaPay or a bank transfer to a personal account rather than a company account.

Another pattern is the fake trading app. It looks convincing, shows a balance that grows, and lets you withdraw a small amount at first to build trust. When you try a larger withdrawal, a new condition appears, such as a fee or a tax you must pay first. That request for more money is the signal to stop.

A third pattern uses romance or friendship. The conversation runs for weeks before trading is mentioned at all. By then you are emotionally invested, and the request to top up feels normal. Slow down whenever someone you have not met in person guides you towards a deposit.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Both ends are worth checking - the app you pay from and the broker's funding page - and withdrawals should go back to the account that paid.

Red flags to weigh before you deposit anything

Pressure to act within a short window is a red flag. So is any promise of consistent returns, a guaranteed recovery of previous losses, or a claim that the offer is exclusive to a small group. Legitimate markets move both ways, and nobody controls that.

Check where the money is going. A payment to an individual's GCash or Maya wallet, or to a personal bank account, is not the same as a payment to a business. If the recipient name does not match the platform you think you are using, pause and ask why in writing.

Look at how the platform handles questions. If support only answers in chat, avoids written answers, or deletes critical comments, treat that as information. A firm that cannot explain its own process in plain language is not one to fund.

Protecting yourself if you decide to trade

Decide your risk before you open a position, not after. A forex risk calculator or risk management calculator is a tool for setting the amount you are willing to lose on a single trade, based on your own figures. The site's calculator does the arithmetic, so use it rather than estimating in your head.

Session timing matters for anyone trading from the Philippines. Sydney runs 05:00 to 14:00 PHT, Tokyo 08:00 to 17:00 PHT, London 16:00 to 01:00 PHT, and New York 20:00 to 05:00 PHT. The London and New York overlap, 20:00 to 01:00 PHT, is the busiest stretch of the local evening.

Keep records of every deposit, including the GCash, Maya, InstaPay or bank reference number. If something goes wrong, those references are what you will be asked for. Report suspected investment fraud to the SEC Philippines and to your payment provider as soon as you notice it.

A registration check that stops at the homepage proves nothing

Opening sec.gov.ph and seeing a search box is not the check. The register lists specific entities, so you need the exact legal name on the contract, not the brand on the app icon. Copy that name from the broker's terms page, then search it.

Many apps trade under a marketing name while the licensed entity sits behind it. If the register shows a different company than the one taking your GCash payment, treat that as a mismatch worth resolving before any deposit. Ask support, in writing, which entity holds your funds.

A screenshot of a certificate is not a register entry. Certificates get edited and recycled across fake sites. The only thing that counts is finding the entity yourself, today, on sec.gov.ph. If the name does not appear, the app store rating is irrelevant.

Your payment method decides how much you can claw back

GCash, Maya, InstaPay and PESONet transfers move fast and settle into someone else's account. Once a scammer withdraws, recovery is difficult and slow. That speed is the point scammers rely on, so treat every transfer as final in practice.

Card payments behave differently. A card transaction can be disputed through your bank or card issuer, and there is a paper trail tied to a merchant. If a platform offers both, the funding page usually shows which methods it accepts, so read that page before choosing.

Bank transfer sits somewhere between the two. It leaves a record, but reversing it needs your bank's cooperation and time. Decide how much reversibility you want before you send anything, not after something goes wrong.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. Check the register for the licence; the app store only tells you the app exists.

Screenshot the funding page before you send anything

Scam sites change their deposit details quietly. The account name, the wallet number, or the receiving entity can shift between visits, and the version you saw disappears. Before transferring, capture the funding page, the receiving name and the date.

Then compare that receiving name against the entity you found on sec.gov.ph. A licensed broker collecting into a personal GCash account, or into a name matching nothing in the register, is a serious warning. Legitimate collection details should trace back to the entity you verified.

Keep those screenshots somewhere outside the platform. If the site later vanishes, your own copies are the evidence your bank or the authorities will ask for. Evidence stored only inside a scam app is evidence you no longer have.

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. The account-opening page of the broker lists what that firm accepts.

Reporting has a sequence, and the order affects what you recover

Contact your payment provider first, while the transaction is still fresh. GCash, Maya, your bank or your card issuer can sometimes act on a recent transfer in ways they cannot on an old one. Speed matters more than perfect wording at this stage.

Report to SEC Philippines through sec.gov.ph, since the commission tracks entities operating without registration. Its published guidance tells you what to submit and where. Do not wait until your payment provider has finished before filing with the commission.

Then report to the authorities handling cybercrime and fraud complaints. Keep every reference number, email and screenshot together in one folder. A single tidy timeline is far more useful than scattered messages when anyone reviews your case.

Before you send money
What you seeWhat to check
A fixed monthly return, promised in advanceAsk which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the SEC Philippines registry of capital market participants.
A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchersCheck the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.
Someone offering to trade the account for youManaging money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it.
A withdrawal released only after a new paymentRead the withdrawal terms you agreed to. Any fee created at payout time is absent from them.

None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.ph.

Is forex trading legit in the Philippines?

Trading foreign exchange is a real activity, but whether a particular platform is legitimate is a separate question that you have to check for yourself. Go to the SEC Philippines list of registered entities at sec.gov.ph and search the exact entity name. Let the register answer it rather than a chat group or an app listing.

How do I check if a trading platform is registered?

Open sec.gov.ph and search the company name as it appears on your documents, not the brand name in the app. Read the entry carefully and note what it covers. If you cannot find the entity, do not deposit while you wait for an answer.

What should I do if I think I have been scammed?

Stop sending money immediately, including any fee or tax requested before a withdrawal. Gather your GCash, Maya, InstaPay or bank references and any chat logs, then report to the SEC Philippines and to your payment provider. Tell your bank or wallet provider quickly, because speed matters for any recovery attempt.

A margin account can lose more than it holds. Most retail accounts trading forex and CFDs lose money, and nothing on this page is advice.
