How to Start Forex Trading in the Philippines, Step by Step
Open your first forex account in the right order: check the register, verify the broker, then fund it.
Updated Oct 2026 · how we rate brokers
Search the broker's legal entity on the SEC Philippines registry of capital market participants before you compare spreads.
Brokers verify this before the first withdrawal, not at signup.
Brokers verify this before the first withdrawal, not at signup.
Small first deposit, and withdraw to the same account you paid from.
At the size you intend to use for real — otherwise it teaches nothing.
Brokers usually also ask for proof of address. Requirements differ per broker — the account-opening page lists what that firm accepts.
Check the SEC Philippines register before you open anything
Before you hand over an email address or a single peso, open sec.gov.ph and look up the company on the SEC Philippines list of registered entities. That register is the only local check that matters at this stage, and it answers the question directly rather than through someone's opinion.
Search the exact company name you were given, not the brand on the app icon. If the name on the register and the name on the sign-up page do not match, stop and ask why in writing. A firm that cannot explain the difference clearly is not one you want holding your funds.
Keep a screenshot of what you find, with the date. It takes a minute and it gives you a record if anything goes wrong later.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Brands are marketing; search the legal entity the broker prints at the bottom of its site.
Set up the account in the order that avoids trouble
Register with your real name, exactly as it appears on your ID. Mismatched names are the single most common reason a withdrawal gets held up, and fixing it later means sending documents back and forth.
Complete identity verification before you deposit. Upload a clear photo of your ID and a selfie if asked, in good light, with no glare across the text. Approval usually comes faster when the images are readable the first time.
Only then open the funding page. Read what it says about deposits and withdrawals, including processing times and any conditions attached to your method, before you send anything. The broker's funding page is the place to check those details, not a forum post.
Ways money reaches an account in the Philippines
- GCash · used most
- Mobile wallet — limits set by the wallet provider and the broker
- Maya
- Mobile wallet — limits set by the wallet provider and the broker
- InstaPay
- Bank transfer — limits set by your bank and the broker
- PESONet
- Bank transfer — limits set by your bank and the broker
- Bank transfer
- Limits set by your bank and the broker
- Card
- Card payment — limits set by your card issuer and the broker
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Both ends are worth checking - the app you pay from and the broker's funding page - and withdrawals should go back to the account that paid.
Fund through a rail you already use, and start small
GCash is the rail most Filipino traders reach for first, and Maya, InstaPay, PESONet, bank transfer and card are also common. Whichever you pick, confirm the receiving name matches the broker entity you verified earlier.
Send a small first amount that you are comfortable losing entirely. This is not about testing the market, it is about testing the plumbing: does the deposit arrive, does it show in your account, and does a withdrawal come back to you without drama.
Withdraw a portion once, early, before you trade seriously. A broker that accepts money quickly but slows down the return trip is telling you something, and you want to learn it with a small sum rather than a large one.
Never fund an account with money you need for bills, tuition or an emergency. Trading with borrowed money or a credit line turns a normal losing streak into a crisis.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. The difference between this rate and the one your broker uses is money you pay.
Learn the platform, then choose your hours around PHT
Spend your first sessions on the demo or a tiny live position learning where things are: how to place an order, how to set a stop, how to close. Knowing the buttons before the market moves is worth more than any indicator.
Philippine Time is UTC+8, so the trading day runs on someone else's clock. Sydney is open 05:00 to 14:00 PHT, Tokyo 08:00 to 17:00 PHT, London 16:00 to 01:00 PHT, and New York 20:00 to 05:00 PHT.
The London and New York overlap, 20:00 to 01:00 PHT, is when activity is usually heaviest. That is convenient for many people here, but it also means late nights, so decide in advance which sessions fit your work and sleep rather than chasing every move.
If you want structured learning, compare courses carefully. Stock trading courses online, real estate broker courses and custom broker courses are different things with different regulators, so check who stands behind any course before you pay for it.
| Part of the day | Local time · PHT |
|---|---|
| Busiest window | 20:00-01:00 PHT — London and New York open together |
| Thinnest stretch | 05:00-14:00 PHT — Sydney alone, wider spreads |
| European open | 16:00-01:00 PHT |
| US open | 20:00-05:00 PHT |
| Closed | Friday New York close until the Sydney open on Monday |
Until 28 March London is on GMT, and until 1 November New York is on EDT; the hours shown apply to the clocks in force today. The Philippines does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.
Open the account in your own name, matching your ID exactly
The name on your trading account has to match the name on the government ID you verify with. Nicknames, married names that were never updated, and initials typed in a hurry all cause failed verification later, usually right when you want to withdraw. Fix the mismatch before you fund anything, not after.
Use one email address and one mobile number that you will still control in a year. A prepaid SIM that expires or a university email that gets deactivated can lock you out of the account and out of the verification queue. Keep the recovery details somewhere you can actually find them.
If a platform lets you open an account without completing identity checks, treat that as a warning rather than convenience. The verification step is what ties the account to you, and skipping it creates problems when money moves out. Complete it early, while the process is calm.

A demo account is for learning the buttons, not for proving you can trade
Demo accounts run on simulated money, so losses do not sting and hesitation disappears. That changes behaviour in ways that will not carry over to a live account funded from GCash or a bank transfer. Use the demo to learn order types, chart tools and where things sit in the app.
The common failure is spending weeks on a demo, feeling competent, then funding live and discovering that the same decisions feel completely different. The gap is emotional, not technical. Plan for it by starting live with an amount small enough that a bad day is annoying rather than damaging.
Move on from the demo once you can place, modify and close an order without hunting for the button. Staying too long builds habits that only work when nothing is at stake. The point of the demo is familiarity, not proof.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. Check the register for the licence; the app store only tells you the app exists.
Check what the platform does with your money before you send any
Where your funds sit matters as much as who you send them to. Some platforms hold client money in segregated accounts, others mix it with operating funds. That distinction is published, usually in the client agreement or on the funding page, and it is worth reading before the first transfer rather than after a problem.
Withdrawal is the step that reveals how a platform really operates. Look at how withdrawals are requested, how long they take, and whether the money returns to the same rail it came from. A platform that accepts GCash deposits but only pays out by bank transfer has told you something useful.
Keep your own record of every transfer: the date, the rail used, and the reference number the app gives you. If a deposit does not appear, that reference is what support will ask for first. Screenshots of the confirmation screen cost nothing and save a lot of back and forth.
| Document | What it proves |
|---|---|
| PhilID, UMID or passport | Who you are |
| Selfie with the ID document | That the document is in your hands |
Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. The account-opening page of the broker lists what that firm accepts.
Treat your first live account as a test of the process, not of your predictions
The first live account is there to prove the plumbing works: deposits arrive, orders execute, withdrawals come back to your GCash or bank account. Judge it on that, not on whether your first few trades happened to go the right way. A profitable first week teaches almost nothing about the process.
Run one full cycle before increasing anything. Fund, place a small trade, close it, then withdraw and confirm the money lands where you expect. If any step is slow, unclear or requires chasing support, you have found the answer while the amounts are still small.
Decide in advance what would make you stop and reassess, and write it down. A run of losses, a withdrawal that does not arrive, or a platform that changes its terms without telling you are all reasonable triggers. Having the trigger set beforehand removes the temptation to rationalise in the moment.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| A fixed monthly return, promised in advance | Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the SEC Philippines registry of capital market participants. |
| A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers | Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers. |
| Someone offering to trade the account for you | Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it. |
| A withdrawal released only after a new payment | Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. Any fee created at payout time is absent from them. |
None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.ph.
Do I need a lot of money to start forex trading in the Philippines?
No fixed figure applies, and any number you see quoted elsewhere may not match the broker you choose. Check the broker's own funding page for its minimum, then treat your first deposit as money you can afford to lose completely while you learn the platform.
Is GCash the best way to fund a forex account?
GCash is the rail most people here already have, and Maya, InstaPay, PESONet, bank transfer and card all work too. The right choice is the one your broker supports and that lets you withdraw back the same way. Confirm the receiving name matches the entity you checked on the SEC Philippines register.
What time should a Filipino beginner trade forex?
It depends on your schedule, not on a rule. Tokyo runs 08:00 to 17:00 PHT, London 16:00 to 01:00 PHT, and New York 20:00 to 05:00 PHT, with the London and New York overlap from 20:00 to 01:00 PHT typically the busiest. Pick a window you can keep consistently without wrecking your sleep.
Check the broker before the spread.
The SEC Philippines register is the only list that matters. Here is how to read it.
